Neighborhood schools in Altadena, Pasadena, and Sierra Madre have been significantly affected by the drastic state budget cuts of the last few years, coupled with lower student enrollment and the ending of one-time grants and funding. Cuts to schools in the Pasadena Unified School District have included administrative reductions, school closures, employee furloughs and layoffs, larger class sizes, elimination of librarians, and fewer enrichment activities.
California public schools and colleges have been cut over $20 billion in the last three years; 30,000 teachers were laid off. This year, 2011-2012, public education stands to lose another 20,000 teachers and $2-$4 billion more in budget cuts.
In the 2011-2012 budget, the Pasadena Unified School District stands to lose $700 per student on top of the $32 million we cut in the last four years. Our schools will lose the people and programs that have raised student achievement, especially at our middle and high schools.
